HLC Service for Schools
HLC follows the Guidelines for the Management of Head Lice provided by Education Queensland and Queensland Health and can provide an option of Head Lice Control Programs for your school.
Education Queensland advocates that being proactive, reactive and providing support are the main objectives to managing head lice at home and in the school community.
For a fee per student (usually payable by parent/guardian) HLC will provide the following.
Our service supports the Department of Education, Training and the Arts policy HLS-PR-011: Control of Head Lice (Pediculosis) in Schools.
Proactive Strategies
HLC will provide a mobile clinic to the school for a period of 2-3 weeks (depending on the number of students at your school) during which time HLC will work in partnership with the principal to ensure that the school takes a positive and whole of school approach by having a number of strategies in place including:
- the school provides each family with a Managing head lice at home package
- the school nominates and supports HLC to be the support volunteer
- HLC will ensure that the school newsletter regularly includes announcements which remind families to check weekly for head lice
- HLC use school curriculum materials throughout the period of stay with interactive information sessions using presentation material
- HLC provides a head check program to every student in the school
- HLC provides parental/guardian workshops during the period of stay consisting of:
- conditioner and combing techniques
- facts about head lice
- how to manage head lice at home
- product information
- dispel the myths and stigma associated with head lice
- HLC services
Reactive Strategies
- HLC will notify all parents when head lice is detected
- HLC will treat students with head lice for a fee payable by the parent/guardian.
Support
What is the meaning of support?
(Enable to last out, keep from falling, give strength to, encourage; lend assistance to and back-up)
HLC will provide support to schools, parents, students and the communities as whole in the way of:
- Organise educational activities for parents and other members of the school community via workshops
- Help dispel the myths and stigma associated with head lice
- Liase with the principals, teachers and parents/guardians
- Remaining positive in our conviction that head lice can be managed by schools and families by working together
HLC is committed to the whole of school approach to addressing the health and well-being of everyone in the school community
By working together head lice can be managed and people can feel more in control of the issue. It’s all about learning to manage them and the issues around them (stigma and blame) effectively.

3 Day Head Lice Control Program
Educational presentation for students
These presentations really focus on the stigma associated with head lice as well as the life cycle and what we can do to avoid catching head lice.
Head Checks
After each presentation HLC staff will provide a head check. For the sake of the students this process is completely confidential. When the checks are complete then a note will go home to the parents as well as a follow up phone call to provide advice.
Workshops for parents/guardians
These workshops are held at the School and assist parents with advice on head lice, combing technique demonstrations, product information and Head Lice Clinic services
Fee Structure
The fee for the 3 Day head lice control program is $2 per student enrolled.
This fee is paid by the school to the Head Lice Clinic upon commencement of the program i.e. 500 students enrolled in the school = $1,000 payable to the Head Lice Clinic.
Some schools choose to pass this fee on to the parents or alternatively hold fund raising days throughout the year.
2 Week Head Lice Control Program

On site treatments
The Head Lice Clinic is a relocatable unit that is located within the school. This clinic will provide treatments for students upon request by their parents. For the 2 week program the treatments are provided at a heavily discounted fee while HLC is located at your school.
Fee Structure
The fee for the 2 week head lice control program is $4 per student enrolled.
This fee is paid by the school to the Head Lice Clinic upon commencement of the program i.e. 500 students enrolled in the school = $2,000 payable to the Head Lice Clinic.
Some schools choose to pass this fee on to the parents or alternatively hold fund raising days throughout the year.
These programs will benefit your school community by helping to manage and control head lice in turn preventing epidemic proportions.
